Bank of Scotland unveils £20 note honouring Scott McTominay’s iconic World Cup goal

A limited-edition £20 note inspired by Scott McTominay’s famous overhead kick has been unveiled by the Bank of Scotland to celebrate Scotland’s return to the FIFA World Cup.

The commemorative note marks the men’s national team’s qualification for the tournament for the first time since 1998 and features imagery based on McTominay’s memorable goal against Denmark.

The unique design blends traditional banknote features with artwork capturing the midfielder’s spectacular overhead kick, which helped Scotland secure their place at the 2026 World Cup.

Only 100 of the special notes have been produced, with 50 set to be distributed through collector auctions, a public prize draw, and special pop-up events in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Scotland booked their spot at the World Cup after a dramatic 4-2 victory over Denmark at Hampden Park in Glasgow in November, with McTominay opening the scoring early in the game with the stunning overhead effort.

Reacting to the tribute, McTominay described the honour as deeply meaningful.

“Reaching the biggest stage of world football is something every player dreams of, and I know it means everything to our fans,” he said.

“Moments like that belong to everyone who follows the team, so seeing my goal featured on a Scottish banknote feels incredibly special.”

Proceeds from the auction and prize draw will go to Crisis Scotland, a national charity supporting people experiencing homelessness.

The online auction is scheduled to run until 11:00 BST on Friday, June 26, with fans also able to enter the prize draw until the same deadline.

The Bank of Scotland will also host pop-up events in Glasgow and Edinburgh, where supporters will have the chance to crack a vault combination code in hopes of winning one of the highly sought-after commemorative notes.

The Bank of Scotland has unveiled a special limited-edition £20 note to celebrate Scotland’s dramatic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring the iconic overhead kick widely regarded as one of the country’s greatest-ever goals.

Emma Noble, chair of the Scottish executive committee at the Bank of Scotland, said the commemorative note was designed to honour a historic football moment while reflecting Scotland’s national identity.

“Securing qualification in such dramatic fashion is a moment fans will never forget, and we wanted to mark it in a way that’s rooted in Scottish identity,” she said.

“Like football, banknotes have long been part of our country’s story, and this limited-edition £20 note combines those two traditions with a modern, creative twist.”

Noble described Scott’s spectacular overhead kick as an unforgettable moment in Scottish football history and praised the collaboration behind the project.

“Scott’s overhead kick is already regarded as one of the nation’s greatest ever goals,” she added.

“It’s been a privilege to work with him to bring it to life in such a unique way, and we’re grateful for his support in helping raise funds for Crisis as they work to end homelessness across Scotland.”

The commemorative note also supports the charity Crisis, which works to tackle homelessness across Scotland.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will feature 48 teams and will be staged across 16 cities in the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.

Scotland are set to begin their campaign against Haiti on June 14 in Boston before taking on Morocco on June 19, also in Boston. Their final group match will be against Brazil on June 24 in Miami.
