Somoco Ghana Limited has launched an upgraded version of its popular Bajaj RE tricycle, a development the company says is aimed at empowering transport operators, creating jobs and improving mobility solutions across Ghana.

The launch event, held on Monday at the Lancaster Kumasi City Hotel, brought together transport operators, fleet managers, dealers, mechanics, financial institutions and government stakeholders to witness the unveiling of the enhanced model.

Also present were representatives from the National Union of Tricycle Operators Ghana (NUTOG), the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), the Asokwa Municipal Assembly and financing partner Maxbalo, highlighting the growing role of tricycles within Ghana’s transport sector.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Managing Director of Somoco Ghana Limited, Nii Ayi Hyde, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to delivering practical transport solutions that not only move people but also create economic opportunities.

“Transportation is a powerful tool for economic empowerment. Every tricycle on the road represents an opportunity for someone to earn a living, support a family and contribute to local economic growth,” he said.

Mr Hyde explained that the newly upgraded Bajaj RE has been designed specifically to meet the operational needs of drivers and transport entrepreneurs.

He noted that the vehicle comes with improved features, including a reverse gear system for easier manoeuvring, a more powerful engine, better fuel efficiency, enhanced passenger comfort and greater income-generating potential for operators.

Industry players at the event described the upgrades as timely, especially as demand for affordable and efficient transport services continues to rise in both urban and rural areas.

Beyond the product launch, discussions also centred on access to financing, fleet expansion, transport regulation and the role of innovative mobility solutions in supporting Ghana’s broader economic development agenda.

Head of Marketing at Somoco Ghana Limited, Jerry Aye-Gboyin, also stressed that the company’s vision goes beyond vehicle sales.

“Our goal is to transform transportation in Ghana by supporting drivers, fleet owners, dealers and entrepreneurs with reliable products that deliver long-term value and profitability,” he said.

Participants at the event also welcomed growing partnerships between transport operators and financial institutions, noting that access to flexible financing remains a major challenge for many aspiring entrepreneurs looking to enter the sector.

As Ghana explores new ways to create jobs and improve mobility, industry observers believe the introduction of upgraded commercial vehicles such as the Bajaj RE could help expand transport services while supporting sustainable livelihoods.

Somoco Ghana Limited, the sole authorised distributor of Bajaj vehicles and mobility solutions in Ghana, has positioned itself as a key player in the country’s commercial transport industry.

The company says it remains committed to investing in products and services that support trade, job creation and broader socio-economic development across the country.
