Two Men Indicted in Palm Beach County for Repeated Sexual Abuse of a 7-Year-Old Girl

West Palm Beach, Florida — Two men from Guatemala are facing some of the most serious charges possible in Florida after authorities say they repeatedly sexually abused a young girl over several weeks.

Josue D. Mendez-Sales, 27, and Pablo N. Cobon-Mendez, 23, were each indicted on two counts of sexual battery on a child under the age of 12. In Florida, this kind of crime against a child that young is considered a capital offense, meaning prosecutors can seek the death penalty or life in prison.

The alleged abuse came to light when the 7-year-old girl told her babysitters what had been happening. According to police, both men later admitted to the acts during interviews with investigators. The abuse reportedly occurred daily while the girl was in their care, starting when she was just 6 years old.

Palm Beach County State Attorney Alexcia Cox called the case one of the most disturbing violations of a child’s safety and trust. “These allegations represent the most serious and disturbing violations,” she said in a statement. “Our children are precious, and those who prey on them will be met with the full weight of the law.”

Both men were arrested in late July and remain held without bond in the Palm Beach County Jail. Mendez-Sales has pleaded not guilty; Cobon-Mendez’s plea was not immediately clear in court records.

Prosecutors have made it clear they plan to pursue the death penalty, describing the repeated abuse as “horrific” and a profound betrayal of a defenseless child. The case has sparked strong reactions online and in the community, with many calling for the harshest possible punishment given the victim’s age and the nature of the crimes. Florida law allows the death penalty in these cases precisely to protect the most vulnerable.

As the legal process moves forward, the focus remains on seeking justice for the young girl and holding those responsible fully accountable.
