The Paramount Chief of the Talensi Traditional Area, Tongraan Kugbilsong Nalebgtang, has called on political parties to put national development above partisan interests, stressing that his loyalty as a traditional ruler lies with the progress of his people rather than political affiliation.

The Tongraan made the remarks when the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, paid a courtesy visit to his palace as part of the party’s ongoing “thank you” tour of the Upper East Region.

Speaking during the meeting, the Paramount Chief acknowledged that he was once affiliated with the New Patriotic Party but explained that his position as a chief now requires him to remain politically neutral.
“Even though I was an NPP member sometime ago, my being a chief right now means I have no political party,” the Tongraan said. “I will always support any political party that comes into power, provided their focus is to bring development to Talensi.”
He stressed that traditional leaders should be regarded as partners in national development rather than instruments for political competition. According to him, constant political divisions between rival parties often slow development within communities.

The Tongraan therefore urged both the ruling NPP and the opposition NDC to work together in unity for the benefit of the country.
“I call on all party members, both NPP and NDC, to come together and support the development of the country,” he added.

For his part, Mr Asiedu Nketiah thanked the Paramount Chief for the warm reception and words of advice. He assured the traditional leader that the NDC remains committed to maintaining peace and collaborating with chiefs and local authorities to ensure development reaches communities at the grassroots level.
The visit formed part of the NDC’s broader engagement with traditional authorities across the country as the party continues efforts to strengthen ties with local communities and opinion leaders.

Also present at the gathering was the District Chief Executive for Talensi, John Nabwonya Millim, who outlined a number of development projects undertaken in the constituency since assuming office.
