MTN Has Invested Heavily in Education, Health and Economic Empowerment — Stephen Blewett

MTN Ghana has officially launched its 30th anniversary celebrations at a high-profile media event held at the MTN House in Accra.

The milestone marks three decades of mobile telecommunications service in Ghana, tracing the company’s journey from its origins as Spacefon in 1996 to becoming one of the country’s leading telecom providers.

The launch event was attended by Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, and the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett.

As part of the celebrations, MTN Ghana announced plans to invest $1.1 billion in network infrastructure over the next three years as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s digital ecosystem and improve connectivity nationwide.

Speaking at the event, Stephen Blewett highlighted the company’s contribution to Ghana’s development through investments in education, healthcare, economic empowerment, and various social intervention programmes.

He said the company remains committed to supporting national development while expanding access to digital services across the country.

MTN Ghana also unveiled a year-long roadmap for its anniversary celebrations, which will include community outreach initiatives, network upgrades, and customer reward programmes.

Addressing guests at the event, Samuel Nartey George stressed the need for Ghana to move beyond simply expanding digital access and focus instead on becoming a global digital powerhouse.

According to the Minister, the first phase of Ghana’s telecom growth centred largely on infrastructure and connectivity, but the next chapter must prioritise innovation, global competitiveness, and technological independence.

He commended MTN Ghana’s planned $1.1 billion investment, describing it as a major step toward building a resilient digital backbone for the country.

The Minister also highlighted government initiatives such as the “Dig Once” policy, which is intended to reduce fibre rollout costs by about 60 percent while minimising cable cuts across the telecom industry.

He further praised MTN Ghana’s $2 million investment in digital coding initiatives and its planned 2026 network cell-site expansion projects, describing them as important measures to empower young people through digital entrepreneurship and artificial intelligence education.
