The Adenta Circuit Court has granted GH¢500,000 bail each to Israel Kwadwo Safo Akofena and eight others accused of being involved in a shooting incident at Kwabenya in Accra.
The accused persons, who are each required to provide two sureties, are standing trial over their alleged roles in the June 21 incident, which is currently under police investigation.
Akofena, younger brother of former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo, reportedly turned himself in at the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters on June 22, 2026, a day after the incident. He was subsequently transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for questioning.
Police say a search conducted at his residence and vehicle in Kwabenya led to the recovery of multiple items, including 120 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 50 rounds of .45 calibre ammunition, 25 rounds of .40 calibre ammunition, loaded magazines, and two Glock pistols, one of which is said to be registered in his name.
Two additional suspects, Nana Kwaku Afriyie and Kwadwo Safo Koomson, were later arrested, bringing the total number of accused persons to nine. The group also includes six private security personnel who were earlier detained at the scene.
All nine appeared before the Adenta Circuit Court on Tuesday, June 23, where they were granted bail. The case has been adjourned for further hearing.
The incident is linked to a long-running leadership dispute within the Kristo Asafo Mission following the death of its founder, Kwadwo Safo, on September 11, 2025.
The dispute reportedly centres on succession arrangements within the church, with tensions escalating into the June 21 shooting incident in Kwabenya.
Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
