Delta to introduce high-speed in-flight internet with Amazon Leo partnership, benefiting Accra travellers

Delta Air Lines has announced a new partnership with Amazon Leo aimed at delivering faster and more affordable in-flight internet services to passengers worldwide — a move expected to significantly improve connectivity for travellers flying to and from Ghana.

The agreement, unveiled on April 20, 2026, will see Amazon Leo’s low Earth orbit satellite technology deployed across 500 Delta aircraft starting in 2028.

According to Delta Chief Executive Officer Ed Bastian, the partnership is part of the airline’s broader strategy to strengthen digital connectivity for passengers across its global network.

“This agreement gives us the fastest and most cost-effective technology available to better connect the world today,” Mr Bastian said.

The satellite-powered system is expected to provide high-speed, low-latency internet access onboard, allowing passengers to stream movies, browse the internet, upload content, and participate in video calls during flights.

For Ghanaian travellers using Delta’s routes through Kotoka International Airport — especially flights connecting Accra to destinations in the United States and Europe — the development could mean more reliable and seamless Wi-Fi on long-haul journeys.

Amazon President and CEO Andy Jassy said the technology is designed to expand access to dependable internet services while transforming the passenger experience in the air.

“It’s going to make the in-flight experience so much better, and it’s going to change what’s possible while travelling,” he said.

Delta noted that it already provides free high-speed Wi-Fi to SkyMiles members and has recorded more than 163 million onboard connections to date. The airline added that nearly its entire global network now supports streaming-quality internet, with transpacific routes expected to be fully connected by fall 2026.

The partnership also deepens Delta’s existing relationship with Amazon. Since 2020, the airline has migrated close to 600 applications to the cloud using Amazon Web Services as part of efforts to modernise its operations and improve customer experience.

Delta also works with several major brands, including American Express, T-Mobile, YouTube and Uber, as it continues to expand what it describes as a seamless digital travel ecosystem.
