Evangelist Edward Freeman criticises some clergy over alleged exploitation of church members

Evangelist Edward Freeman, widely known as “Wiase ye broni dea,” has criticised some Black clergy for, in his view, neglecting the needs of their members and vulnerable groups while focusing on financial gain.

In an exclusive interview with the media, the Tarkwa-based evangelist expressed concern about what he described as exploitative practices within certain churches. He alleged that some pastors have developed questionable means of collecting money from congregants, often to enrich themselves.

Freeman questioned the justification often given for church dues, particularly claims that such funds are used to build schools and hospitals. He argued that many ordinary members are unable to afford services provided by these institutions, raising concerns about who truly benefits from them.

He further claimed that while members are encouraged to prioritise spiritual devotion with promises of future blessings, some church leaders are instead using contributions to fund lavish lifestyles, including expensive homes, luxury vehicles and quality education for their children.

The outspoken evangelist concluded by calling for a re-evaluation of leadership within some churches, urging clergy to return to what he believes should be the core mission of supporting their congregations and the less privileged.
