GOC commits $100,000 to OlympAfrica project as construction set to begin in June 2026

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) is expected to begin construction work on the OlympAfrica project at Amasaman in June 2026, marking a major step toward expanding grassroots sports development in the country.

The announcement was made by GOC President Richard Akpokavie during the committee’s Annual General Meeting held last Saturday.

According to him, a committee chaired by Nii Lantei Bannerman has already been set up to engage key stakeholders, including the Ga North Municipal Assembly, to ensure construction begins before the end of June.

“The board has established a committee, headed by Nii Lantei Bannerman, which is engaging all relevant stakeholders, including the Ga North Municipal Assembly, to ensure we begin work by the end of June,” Mr Akpokavie stated.

The OlympAfrica project was initially designed as a community stadium and youth sports centre. However, the current GOC administration has revised the concept as part of efforts to fast-track implementation.

Mr Akpokavie explained that the urgency to restart work follows an ultimatum from OlympAfrica, which directed Ghana to resume physical construction by June or refund the $100,000 disbursed to the country in 2022 for the project.

To demonstrate its commitment, the GOC has allocated an additional $100,000 in its current budget to kick-start the first phase of the project, which is estimated to cost about $740,000.

“We have provided in our budget for this year the sum of $100,000 to start the construction of a multi-purpose hall,” Mr Akpokavie added.

When completed, the Amasaman OlympAfrica facility is expected to become a major centre for grassroots sports development, helping to identify and nurture young talents in various sporting disciplines beyond football across the country.
