A fatal tanker crash on the Akosombo–Tema Highway at Teye Kwame has left one person dead and another in critical condition after the vehicle overturned and was engulfed in flames in the early hours of Sunday, June 28, 2026.
In a Facebook post, the Somanya Municipal Fire Station said it received a distress call at 4:41 a.m. and promptly dispatched a five-member crew led by Station Officer II (StnOII) Oteng to the scene.

On arrival, fire crews found a tanker had overturned and was already engulfed in flames, with the fire intensifying rapidly and raising fears of a possible explosion along the busy highway corridor.
Firefighters immediately deployed foam to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading or triggering secondary explosions.
After sustained operations, the fire was brought under control at 5:58 a.m. and fully extinguished by 6:03 a.m.

Emergency responders said their quick intervention helped prevent the situation from escalating into a larger disaster, especially given the highly flammable nature of fuel tankers and the vehicle’s proximity to a busy transport route.
Tragically, one male victim, believed to be the tanker driver, was found at the scene burnt beyond recognition, making immediate identification impossible.
The driver’s mate survived the blaze but suffered severe burns. He was rescued and rushed to Akuse Hospital, where he is receiving urgent treatment. His condition is reported to be serious.

The tanker was completely gutted by the fire, leaving behind only a burnt-out skeletal frame. Firefighters and emergency responders proceeded with caution during the operation, mindful of lingering heat and the risk of fuel leakage.
