Dormaa East MP and NGO Provide Modern Toilet Facilities for Schools to Improve Hygiene

The Member of Parliament for Dormaa East, Hon. Rachel Ama Owusuaa, in partnership with Women’s Health to Wealth (WHW), a non-governmental organisation focused on improving women’s welfare and promoting girl-child education, has commissioned modern toilet and mechanised water facilities for three schools in the Dormaa East District.

The beneficiary schools are Asuotiano Presby JHS, Wamfie Presby JHS, and Wamanafo D/A JHS. The project is aimed at improving sanitation and providing a healthier learning environment for students.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Hon. Owusuaa said the initiative is particularly intended to support female students, especially in maintaining proper hygiene during their menstrual periods. She explained that the facilities include a dedicated space for the safe disposal and storage of sanitary materials.

She also urged community leaders and traditional authorities to ensure the facilities are used strictly by students, stressing that they are not meant for public or community use. According to her, proper maintenance of the facilities by students and school authorities is essential to ensure their longevity and to safeguard student health and wellbeing.

The Project Officer of Women’s Health to Wealth, Mr. Reuben Bedzrah, who presented the facilities on behalf of the CEO, Nana Abena Akuamoah-Boateng, noted that the intervention forms part of six planned projects, three of which have been completed, with the remaining expected to be ready by September this year.

He stressed that access to safe water and sanitation is a basic human right and a key factor in improving health, dignity and education. He added that many schools continue to struggle with inadequate facilities, a challenge that negatively affects students’ wellbeing and academic performance.

Mr. Bedzrah expressed appreciation to the Dormaa East District Assembly, the Member of Parliament, and all stakeholders whose support contributed to the successful completion of the project.

At Asuotiano Presby JHS, the Headmistress, Mrs. Francisca Ankomah Ackah, described long-standing sanitation challenges at the school, noting that the lack of proper toilet facilities had disrupted teaching and learning and affected student morale and attendance, particularly among girls.

She welcomed the intervention, describing it as timely and impactful, and expressed gratitude to the NGO, the MP, and all partners involved in the project.

Similarly, the Headmaster of Wamanafo D/A JHS, Mr. Michael Amponsah, speaking on behalf of the student body, thanked WHW and the Member of Parliament for the facility. He assured that the school would put in place strong maintenance systems to ensure its sustainability.

He added that a dedicated committee had been established to oversee the upkeep of the facility, in line with recommendations from both the MP and the NGO.
