The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has announced that it will officially invest Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto as its new Vice-A ceremonial investiture will be held on Saturday, August 1, to formally usher in Professor Aheto as the new Vice-Chancellor and academic leader of the University.
According to a press statement issued on Thursday, July 2, the event will take place at the New Examination Centre (NEC) on the University’s main campus at 10:00 a.m., following his appointment by the University Governing Council.
The ceremony is expected to bring together senior government officials, academics, traditional leaders, alumni, students, development partners, and other invited guests to mark a significant moment in the institution’s history.
It will also symbolise the formal transfer of leadership and authority to Professor Aheto, who will now steer one of Ghana’s leading public universities into its next phase of academic growth, innovation, and institutional development.
Professor Aheto’s appointment follows years of distinguished service within the University’s leadership structure. Prior to becoming Vice-Chancellor, he served as Pro Vice-Chancellor, where he played a key role in advancing the institution’s strategic priorities.
He also previously acted as Vice-Chancellor, providing continuity in leadership and overseeing the administration of the University during a transition period.

Throughout his career at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Professor Aheto has built a strong reputation as an accomplished academic and administrator, known for combining strategic leadership with inclusive, collaborative decision-making.
Colleagues describe him as a resourceful leader, a committed team player, and a results-driven researcher whose work has significantly supported the University’s development agenda.
He is widely recognised for his commitment to attracting competitive research grants and mobilising resources, positioning him as one of UCC’s key advocates for strengthening research capacity and expanding academic innovation.
Beyond his work in Ghana, Professor Aheto has also developed a notable international academic profile. He holds an Adjunct Professorship at the Faculty of Environment, University of Waterloo in Canada, an appointment that reflects his standing within the global academic community.
This affiliation has helped deepen international research collaborations and strengthened knowledge exchange between Ghanaian institutions and global partners.
His research, published in several reputable indexed journals, has contributed meaningfully to global conversations on environmental sustainability and marine resource management. His work focuses on coastal ecosystem conservation, marine governance and ocean management—fields that are increasingly critical as countries confront climate change, biodiversity loss and the need for sustainable use of marine resources.
These contributions have enhanced both his personal academic profile and the University of Cape Coast’s reputation, reinforcing its position as a leading centre for environmental and marine science research.
A defining feature of his career has been his ability to attract and coordinate large-scale international research collaborations. He currently leads and participates in several donor-funded projects in marine, coastal and fisheries management at UCC.
These initiatives are supported by major international development partners and funding agencies, including the World Bank, the African Union, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), USAID, DANIDA, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, among others.
