Post-flood response: Government creates five committees to coordinate national recovery efforts

The Government of Ghana has established five specialised sub-committees to coordinate its national response to the recent Following the flooding that hit parts of Greater Accra and other regions on June 28 and 29, 2026, government has activated a coordinated post-disaster response system to speed up recovery and strengthen national preparedness for future incidents.

The initiative is being driven by a presidential task force, with the aim of streamlining relief efforts while improving long-term flood resilience across affected communities.

Briefing journalists in Accra on Friday, July 3, the Director General of Joint Operations at the Ghana Armed Forces, Brigadier General Forster Okae-Yeboah, outlined the structure guiding the national response.

He explained that five sub-committees have been established: the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee (formerly the Anti-Flood Task Force), the Early Warning Committee, the Sanitation and Health Committee, the Relief and Donations Committee, and the Emergency Communications Committee.

According to him, the framework is designed to ensure closer coordination between government institutions, security agencies, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), and other key stakeholders involved in recovery efforts.

He added that the Chief of Staff is overseeing the entire process on behalf of the President.

“We shall not leave any stone unturned,” Brig. Gen. Okae-Yeboah assured, speaking on behalf of the sub-committees.

He further noted that the Emergency Communications Committee will be responsible for providing regular public updates on the progress of recovery operations.

Beyond immediate relief efforts, he said the structure forms part of a broader national resilience strategy aimed at improving drainage systems, strengthening early warning systems, enforcing planning regulations, and enhancing emergency preparedness across the country.
