Black Stars appoint Portuguese coach Daniel Gaspar as goalkeepers’ trainer for 2026 World Cup

Daniel Gaspar has been appointed as goalkeepers’ trainer for the Ghana national football team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His club, Hartford Athletic, confirmed the appointment as Gaspar joins the technical team led by newly named Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz.

The move reunites Gaspar with Queiroz, with the pair sharing a coaching relationship that stretches back more than three decades. Since first working together in 1992, they have collaborated at several clubs and national teams.

Gaspar brings extensive experience to the Black Stars setup, having worked with the Portugal national football team in different coaching capacities during the early 1990s and again between 2009 and 2010, mainly with the country’s youth teams.

Over the years, he has also worked with the South Africa national football team and clubs including Sporting CP, Nagoya Grampus and New York Red Bulls, formerly known as NY/NJ MetroStars.

In 2003, Gaspar served as Portugal’s goalkeeping coach under Luiz Felipe Scolari before later joining SL Benfica during José Antonio Camacho’s time at the club.

He also reunited with Queiroz at the Iran national football team in 2011, working as assistant and goalkeeping coach. During their time together, Iran qualified for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and reached the quarter-finals of the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.

Since joining Hartford Athletic in 2022, Gaspar has been credited with helping the club enjoy two of its strongest seasons in 2024 and 2025. He also played a role in the team winning its first major title — the USL Jägermeister Cup — last season.

Hartford have also made a solid start to the current campaign, recording four clean sheets in seven matches.

Gaspar now joins the Black Stars as Ghana prepare for a fifth appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England national football team, Croatia national football team and Panama national football team. The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 before taking on England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Queiroz has been tasked with leading Ghana beyond the group stage after the team’s early exits at the 2014 and 2022 World Cups.
