Dormaa youth oppose killings at illegal mining sites, not mining itself – Assembly Member

The Assembly Member for the Kosane Electoral Area in the Dormaa Central Municipality, Fosu Kingsford Kyei, has raised concerns over recurring shooting incidents linked to illegal mining activities in parts of Dormaa, particularly in the Dormaa East District.

According to him, the violence has left several young people injured, claimed lives, and contributed to recent protests in Kyeremasu.

Speaking on behalf of traditional leaders and residents of Kosane and nearby communities during an engagement with the Bono Regional Minister, the Assembly Member clarified that the unrest in Kyeremasu is not opposition to mining itself. Rather, he said the youth are demanding action over repeated shootings at illegal mining sites, which have led to injuries and deaths.

He called on the leadership of the Municipal Security Committee (MUSEC), District Security Committee (DISEC), and Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to strengthen security measures and prevent the emergence of unauthorised task forces allegedly operating in the name of fighting illegal mining.

Mr Kyei argued that such groups have contributed to insecurity and killings in mining communities, stressing the need for urgent intervention to restore calm in the area and across the Bono Region.

Beyond the security concerns, the Assembly Member also highlighted challenges facing schools in the Kosane Electoral Area. He said the three schools in the area are grappling with a serious shortage of furniture, forcing many pupils to study under uncomfortable conditions.

He further appealed for support to improve ICT education, noting that the schools currently lack computers needed for effective teaching and learning in an increasingly digital world.

Mr Kyei urged the Bono Regional Minister to assist in addressing the infrastructure and technology gaps to help better prepare students for the future.
