University of Cape Coast Receives $8,000 Eye Care Equipment to Advance Optometry Training

The School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of Cape Coast has received clinical equipment valued at US$8,000 to enhance practical training and vision care education.

The donation, made by Salaria Eyemed and Optical Suppliers—a subsidiary of KEM Groupe—includes two ophthalmic units, four illuminated visual acuity charts, colour vision charts, trial lens sets and trial lens frames. The equipment is expected to strengthen clinical training and improve students’ hands-on learning experience in optometry.

Presenting the equipment, the Chief Executive Officer of Salaria Eyemed and Optical Suppliers, Dr Abraham Gaitu, said the donation fulfils a pledge he made during the School of Optometry and Vision Science’s maiden White Coat Ceremony.

The contribution forms part of efforts to establish 25 Practice Lanes Vision in commemoration of 25 years of optometry training at the University of Cape Coast.

Dr Gaitu said the donation also holds personal significance, as it coincides with a decade of his professional practice since graduating from the University in 2016.

“It is also significant for me because it marks a decade of my optometry practice. Having completed the University of Cape Coast in 2016, I am back to my alma mater to say ‘thank you’,” he said.

Expressing hope that the equipment would have a lasting impact, he added: “I hope that this equipment is put to good use to help train the next generation of optometrists and bridge the gap in access to quality eye care.”

Receiving the donation on behalf of the School of Optometry and Vision Science, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto, described the gesture as both inspiring and commendable.

He praised the alumnus for giving back to his alma mater through an initiative that supports eye care education and the broader eye health sector.

“Our alumnus is contributing to eye care and the eye support system through his initiative. Coming back to give to the University is very encouraging,” Prof. Aheto said.

He also appealed to other alumni to support the University’s development by contributing in whatever way they can.

“I want to use this medium not just to thank him but to ask other alumni across programmes in the University to come back and support in various ways. Whether in funding, equipment or any other form of assistance, they can help advance the cause and mission of the University,” he added.
